Mark Fell

Manitutshu

BY Vincent PollardPublished May 27, 2011

In January 2011, Mark Fell was invited to make some presets for Razor, a software being developed by Errorsmith for Native Instruments. The UK sound artist developed 40 sounds for the project, but sadly none of them made it into the final production of the software. Fell then decided to use the new sounds he created for this, reworking material from his UL8 album. Manitutshu consists of these eight reworkings and a remix of "Occultation Of..." by Mat Steel. Superbly mastered at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering, what's astonishing is the crispness of sound. Like other Mark Fell albums, it's a somewhat cerebral, nerdy affair, made obvious by such track titles as "Occultation... Razor Simple Acid Pause Version with Lfo to Cutoff," although it does possess an undeniably visceral pulse. Nothing has ever sounded quite so much like the future.
