Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Mike Watt Get Together as Anywhere

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 23, 2011

Consider this some sort of match in prog-punk heaven, but helium-voiced Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala and legendary, nimble-fingered bassist Mike Watt (the Minutemen, fIREHOSE) have just announced their new band, Anywhere.

What might be most surprising about the new group, however, is that Bixler-Zavala won't be letting loose his patented high-pitched warble. The ex-At the Drive-In singer will instead take a reprieve from his regular frontman duties and pound out some beats from behind a drum kit. Vocals will be handled by Sleepy Sun's Rachel Fannan, while Triclops! member Christian Eric Beaulieu plays guitar.

It's unclear as of now whether the troupe will be some sort of fusion of their backgrounds (perhaps some samba-laced psych-prog with a touch of punk-funk?), but all will soon be revealed when Anywhere delivers their debut seven-inch, Pyramid Mirrors on Valley King Records.

A tracklisting has yet to be revealed, but you can pre-order the mini-platter, which will be pressed in a limited run of 500, here.

In other Mars Volta news, the band are still waiting for their follow-up to 2009's Octahedron to see release on Warner Bros. The album has apparently been in the can for quite some time, leading the band to question their label's motives, but the set is rumoured to be coming sometime in 2012.
