When Martyn released his debut LP in 2009, many described it as "simple '90s throwback." What they didn't know was that the Dutch DJ began his career back when dubstep was called drum & bass. Commemorating 15 years in the "biz," Martyn presents Ghost People, 11 far-reaching instrumentals that incorporate myriad styles, influences and most prominently, rhythms, rhythms, rhythms. Although much of the album runs at around 140-bpm, Martyn has done an excellent job giving each track its own distinctive character. From the warm, space age bass of "Viper" and the ol' skool sampling of "Popgun" to the late' 80s drum machine crackle of "Horror Vacui" and the Fairlight CMI-guided melodies of "We Are You in the Future," Martyn revisits 25 years of systematic music on Ghost People. Of course, the Metalheadz-meets-Underground Resistance referencing of "Twice As" will only seem inventive to true technophiles, but at least Martyn has created a place for said nerds to hide once Korn drop their promised dubstep LP.
