Before Mastodon delivered their Emperor of Sand LP earlier this year, it was rumoured the release would be a double album, one half of which was written by guitarist Brent Hinds. The axeman told Guitar World last year that it was titled Cold Dark Place and was written about a breakup he had gone through. Now, the effort may see the light of day as a standalone project.
While there has been no official announcement from the band, an Amazon UK listing points to a September 22 release date through Reprise/WEA. Hinds corroborated the album's existence by posting the art to his Instagram account, promising fans that there are "new jamz coming soon!"
In 2016, Hinds told Guitar World that the record contains "some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit."
