Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has revealed that he caught COVID-19 back at the end of February — and that he's still in recovery.
Speaking with AZ Central, the Puscifer leader shared that his healing process has been ongoing for months.
"I'm still dealing with the residual effects," Keenan said. "But it was ugly. I survived it, but it wasn't pretty. So I definitely had to deal with that."
Despite his diagnosis, the artist has been very active with his various projects, having announced Puscifer's fourth studio project, Existential Reckoning, just last month. That's not to say his health concerns haven't slowed him down, though.
"I kind of didn't want to run around screaming it," Keenan admitted. "But it's real. And there's after-effects. I had to go through some major medications to undo the residual effects. Still coughing. There's still lung damage."
He continued: "Every other day, I have these coughing fits because my lungs are still damaged at the tips. And I just got over the inflammation that was going on with my wrist and hands. I had an autoimmune attack on my system in the form of rheumatoid arthritis. Basically, from what I understand, it attacks weird spots and it's random."
He went on to say that he's had several friends contract the virus, as well as some family members, some of whom have since passed away. As far as others are concerned, Keenan spoke out strongly against anti-maskers, suggesting the stance is ridiculous and "just an absurdity."
"We wear seatbelts. We don't smoke in trains, planes or taxis anymore, or even restaurants. There's reasons for those things," he explained. "There are some compromises that come along with freedom. I'm not sure why that's so difficult to grasp."
