Today (February 7) is now officially International Clash Day in the city of Toronto.
Mayor John Tory made the proclamation this morning, joining a number of international cities in honouring Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky "Topper" Headon for making socially conscious music as the Clash.
The legendary punk band formed in London in 1976, and later performed at historic Toronto venues like the Rex Danforth Theatre, the O'Keefe Centre, the CNE bandshell and Maple Leaf Gardens.
Tory's declaration went on to highlight Strummer's inspirational message that "People can change anything they want to, and that means everything in the world."
Reiterating Toronto's position as a "music city," the official proclamation also notes that the Ontario capital "celebrates the influence of all genres and all those who birth new sounds through their talent and creative expression."
See the mayor's full message below, then get to celebrating by chugging (or snorting?) some Koka Kola, getting lost in the supermarket or rocking the casbah.
