Punk rock/post-hardcore was dealt a pretty big blow when Hot Water Music called it quits back in 2006. Well, they also kind of signed off back in 1996, so it wasn't all that surprising. Even less of a shock was that in recent years they have talked about doing some reunion gigs. That leaves them third in the leave-and-return game, behind Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne. What sad company to put HWM in but as the Radiohead song goes, "you do it to yourself."
Since then, Hot Water Music's members have been engaged in various endeavours but nothing of consequence. That is, until the band's Chuck Ragan announced that he's in the process of creating a split seven-inch with Brian Fallon, the main man behind current hot-to-trot New Brunswick, NJ outfit Gaslight Anthem. As most already know, the gritty-throated Fallon has been compared to a young Springsteen, similar hometown notwithstanding.
Set for release via SideOneDummy Records on July 21, the record is called Gospel Songs and will naturally be a double A-side affair, 'cause Fallon surely understands his newbie debt to Ragan. Still, Ragan clearly accepts that he's getting the better end of the deal by riding Fallon's current popularity.
Ragan's tune "Glory" has been culled from his new full-length album, due September 8, while Fallon's track is an original called "Tin Pan Alley," not the blues standard. Bummer. The split is one of three vinyl releases from SideOneDummy, which will also include a joint venture by Mike Hale and Kevin Seconds.
