Memory Tapes Returns with Player Piano

It's been a while since Memory Tapes main man Dayve Hawk launched his hazy debut Seek Magic, and over here at Exclaim! (and elsewhere too, we imagine), we've been patiently waiting for a follow-up to that set. Thankfully, he's pulled through, and then some: he's just announced Memory Tapes' new LP, as well as an upcoming third full-length.

Titled Player Piano, the next Memory Tapes record will drop July 5 on Carpark. The set will arrive a day earlier around the world, with Something in Construction handling the record in Europe and Inertia tackling the disc's Australian release. The record was tracked at Hawk's home studio in New Jersey.

While a tracklisting has yet to pop up, you've already heard one song, kind of. Back in January, the guy loosed the surreal and hazy pop number "Today Is Our Life" on the Love SIC Disco compilation. A new version of the tune will be featured on Player Piano.

A press release for the set describes Player Piano as "keyboard-based psychedelic girl-group songs," but it will still feature the warped-yet-warm feeling of his previous work.

If that weren't enough, the press release adds that Hawk is already prepping his third album. This next one sounds pretty far from the typical Memory Tapes sound, though. It's being pumped as a "space rock, kind of Sabbath" guitar-based set. Weird.
