It's been almost three years since the hip-hop world was shaken by the sudden death of iconic rapper MF DOOM, who passed away at 49 on October 31, 2020. Now, an inquest into the British MC born Daniel Dumile's death has led his widow, Jasmine Dumile, to reveal his cause of death.
DOOM's death wasn't publicly announced until a couple months after the fact, and at the time, his wife cited "unknown causes" as the reason for his passing.
As per Leeds Live, the inquest has uncovered that the rapper died in hospital after his condition "suddenly deteriorated." Dumile told the publication that, despite being in good shape, her husband had been coping with a few health issues — including kidney disease and high blood pressure — at the time, which caused anxiety and weight gain.
Dumile said her late spouse had been prescribed Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for his blood pressure. After just two doses, he reportedly developed breathing problems. Swelling of his throat and tongue sent him to the ER — and, according to Dumile, his state worsened when he arrived at the St. James Hospital in Leeds. She said she received a call from the rapper in distress and then apparently used another phone to directly alert the nurses on duty.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Dumile claims she wasn't able to visit her husband until October 31, at which point his respirator was turned off. The investigation uncovered that, 10 days beforehand, DOOM had complained about not being able to breathe and attempted to get out of his hospital bed before collapsing and suffering respiratory arrest.
The widow's legal team reportedly probed how frequently medical staff had checked in on the rapper, as well as why there was allegedly a two-hour delay in giving him medication to reduce his throat swelling. They reportedly heard that DOOM's condition was being closely monitored — and that he had shown signs of improvement, speaking with doctors and charting elevated oxygen levels.
Doctors noted that the MC's swollen tongue and throat were a "rare" side-effect of the ACE inhibitors, causing angioedema, a hives-like swelling of the deeper skin layers. St. James Hospital also allegedly carried out a "serious incident investigation" to determine what could be learned from DOOM's case.
The inquiry into the rapper's death is reportedly ongoing.
