MGMT's 2010 album, Congratulations, wasn't quite as well-received as the band's party-staring 2008 album, Oracular Spectacular, and now they are reportedly poised to get even more experimental on the follow-up, which is due out this year.
According to Rolling Stone, the new LP is tentatively slated for a June release. The duo have been recording in a rustic cabin outside of Buffalo, NY, where they reportedly have a large array of synths. The sessions are being co-produced by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Neon Indian, the Flaming Lips).
The new songs are apparently even stranger than their psychedelic forays on Congratulations, with songs built during improvised jams and inspired by Aphex Twin and house music. Band member Ben Goldwasser said, "We're not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it."
Song titles include "Mystery Disease" and "Alien Days," plus a cover of "Introspection" by '60s psychedelic garage rock act Faine Jade.
Beyond that, not much has been confirmed, but stay tuned for updates, since we're bound to learn more soon if MGMT are going to stick to their planned June release date.
