M.I.A. Announces Album Release Date - with a Blimp

So far, only a few details have emerged about M.I.A.'s upcoming third album. We first heard about the record via Diplo, who said it would sound like "Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective." Then, M.I.A. discussed the album, saying that she didn't want it to sound too "hipstery." More recently, the Sri Lankan superstar publicly dissed Lady Gaga and the music business, a surefire sign that she's eyeing the spotlight once again. But that attention-craving didn't end there, as she's now announced her new album's release date in one of the most showy ways possible.

According to Rap-Up [via TwentyFourBit], M.I.A. hired a blimp to fly over Coachella during Jay-Z's performance on Friday (April 16). The blimp advertised M.I.A.'s upcoming appearances at the HARD Music Festival in Los Angeles and New York, as well as the proposed release date for her new album. "New Album 6.29.10," the blimp read.

So there you have it - M.I.A.'s as-yet-untitled third album is scheduled for release on June 29. Provided the release date doesn't get moved a million times, we're looking forward to playing these new tracks all summer.

Rap-Up also promised that M.I.A. would drop a viral video for the new track "Born Free" sometime this week, so keep your eyes peeled.
