When the Directors Label DVDs came out back in 2003, Michel Gondry's was arguably the best of the bunch, or at least the most entertaining. Along with such Gondry-directed music videos as the White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl," Björk's "Bachelorette" and Daft Punk's "Around the World," it contained perhaps the best DVD menu ever, as well as some pretty amazing short films, one of which starred starred David Cross as a living, breathing but neglected piece of poo. Well, the French director behind films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep has another like-minded DVD in the works called Michel Gondry 2: More Videos Before & After DVD 1, which is due out through his website tomorrow (April 14).
On this second DVD, Gondry has included his vids for artists such as Beck ("Cellphone's Dead"), Björk ("Declare Independence"), Paul McCartney ("Dance Tonight") and the Rolling Stones ("Gimme Shelter"). It also contains the director's video for Radiohead's "Knives Out," which, as The Playlist points out, was hated by the band and not included on the first DVD.
"I showed [Thom Yorke] a storyboard and every single detail: he was completely excited and happy for it - and then, it turned out, they all criticize me for being selfish and putting my own views on it and my own introspection," Gondry told The Playlist in 2004. "And they didn't let me use my video for my DVD! And I'm really mad at them for having done that to me, that they abuse their power! It did not go smooth, but if it went smooth, it would be mediocre."
Like Gondry's Directors Label DVD, this one includes several short films, including The Simpsons' "The Hardest Button to Button" parody, Gondry playing some drums with Booker T and a new piece called How to Blow Up a Helicopter (Ayako's Story), which the press release describes as a "heartbreaking documentary-style portrait of a girl trying to connect with her father (who happens to be Steven Seagal)."
