Well-rounded musical adventurer Mike Patton paid tribute to Ennio Morricone on both the Fantomas The Director's Cut and his Mondo Cane LP, but he will shift his gaze towards a different Italian composer, Luciano Berio, on his upcoming album.
Dubbed Laborintus II, the record arrives via Patton's Ipecac imprint July 3 and pays tribute to Berio's avant-garde piece of the same name. Patton's performance, which pairs him with the Brussels-based Ictus Ensemble and the choir group Nederlands Kamerkoor, was captured live at the Holland Festival in June 2010. The experimental composition was written in 1965 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Dante, and was an unsettling mix of classical, free jazz, electronic music, and experimental soprano vocal stylings.
