Mike Watt Working on Third Punk Opera

BY Greg PrattPublished Jun 18, 2010

There are never enough punk operas in the world. Well, maybe there are, but not if you're Mike Watt. The ex-Minutemen/fIREHOSE/Stooges bassist has just given word that he is working on his third - yes, third - punk opera.

Watt is currently finishing up Hyphenated-Man with Tom Watson and Raul Morales from his band Mike Watt + the Missingmen. The opera is being recorded in Brooklyn, at Pere Ubu bassist's Tony Maimon's Studio G, reports Blurt.

Watt describes Hyphenated-Man as being like "one big song with 30 parts." He says it's different from his past opera work in that "there's no beginning-middle-end, like the other two... it's more like all middle." The opera was recorded during the "Prac'n the 3rd Opera" tour, during which the opera was practised, but never played.

Watt's previous two punk operas were 1997's Contemplating the Engine Room and 2004's The Secondman's Middle-Stand.

In other news, the always-prolific Watt is involved in the band Floored by Four, who will release their self-titled debut on September 28 on Chimera Music. As previously reported, Floored by Four also features drummer Dougie Bowne, guitarist Nels Cline and keyboardist Yuka Honda.
