Milanku

It's always refreshing to hear a band play a type of music they're proud of and that's exactly how it feels listening to Milanku's sophomore record, Pris A La Gorge. Milanku mix aspects of hardcore and post-rock, producing a sound reminiscent of Envy or Funeral Diner, but with a downtempo, metallic crunch similar to Titan or Alaskan, creating a raw and interesting sound. Pris A La Gorge features some excellent songwriting, as well as some absolutely flawless dynamics, but the band are a little too conservative with their structures and could have experimented a bit more. Since Milanku never stray too far from their formula, Pris A La Gorge doesn't make for as memorable a listening experience as, say, Envy's All the Footprints You've Ever Left and the Fear Expecting Ahead due to the lack of variety. That said, Milanku do produce some genuine moments of aggression, such as the gigantic wall of sound in "L'inclination," which gives goose bumps. Although it isn't as strong as some records produced by similar-sounding acts, Pris A La Gorge is a solid release with plenty of promise, as long as Milanku are willing to push themselves beyond their comfort zone.
