The sophomore release from this quartet of highbrow Hoosiers is a complex fusion of emo-tinged math rock and mid-Western farm pop. With production help from legendary San Diego-based knob-twiddler Mark Trombino (Drive Like Jehu, No Knife, Tanner), the Mock Orange sound like a cross between Jimmy Eat World, Fishwife and John Cougar Mellencamp. An odd mix to be sure, but the complexity of the chord progressions and time signatures play off perfectly against the straight-forward pop hooks and emotional lyrics with startling results.
