While the two years since their last album, Mr. Beast, gives the impression that Glasgow's Mogwai have been quiet (drummer Martin Bulloch did have surgery to replace his pacemaker, which they ended up auctioning off on eBay), I can assure you that it's soon about to get all sorts of loud (sorry).
They return to the live circuit this weekend with a special performance at their hometown's Tramway, and then an illustrious gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, but right afterwards the fly overseas to Calgary on June 28 for the much anticipated Sled Island festival, and then a one-off Toronto show at the Phoenix two days later.
Guitarist/spokesman Stuart Braithwaite has been keeping fans up to date on the band's website, and a recent posting says it all:
...you should all buy Plan B magazine as it has a free Rock Action cd with a new song by us called Dracula Family, we got our new ep mastered, we start rehearsals for our Tryptich show at the Tramway which is now sold out (thanks!), i will be feeling very disappointed that one of my favourite bands has threatened to sue one of our bands because their name is named after one of their songs (boo!!), i will be getting very excited about the new Batman film and will be checking all the daft websites they've set up up to get numpties like me even more excited about it. Thats it, i can't wait for next week! Stuart B
Reminiscent of 2003's Happy Music For Happy People, "Dracula Family" is a full-on instrumental lifted by entwined guitar lines. It follows their well tread path of a soft beginning that gradually builds and builds, increasing the volume. But instead of falling into that "quiet to loud" trap that we've heard so many bands try to emulate, the Scots simply explore other textures, slipping in distorted synths and bells, which maintain the song's initial affability.
