Mogwai and Arab Strap Members Form Aloha Hawaii

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Jun 13, 2008

In a pairing that makes total sense, former Arab Strap potty mouth Aidan Moffat and Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite are joining forces for a new side-project. Taking the overly positive name of Aloha Hawaii, the pair of Scots will release a series of severely limited seven-inch singles together, but knowing these guys, they are unlikely to feature much sun and fun (not that there is anything wrong with that).

This will by no means be the first time Moffat and Braithwaite have teamed up, however. In 2002, the two started the short-lived Sick Anchors project, and over the years Moffat has joined Mogwai on stage and in the studio on numerous occasions, contributing vocals to tracks like "R U Still In 2 It” from Mogwai’s soon-to-be-reissued debut full-length Young Team.

According to the band’s label Chemikal Underground, Aloha Hawaii will stick exclusively to the vinyl medium and sound pretty adamant about this. "Now, here's the thing: these singles will be available on vinyl only and when we say vinyl only, we mean vinyl only,” the label said in a press release. "There will be no digital files available of these tracks or certainly any digital versions of these tracks you can get your hands on will not be sanctioned by Chemikal Underground. Stuart and Aidan wanted to release something that was purely for you vinyl junkies out there and we saw absolutely no earthly reason to stand in their way.”

The first Aloha Hawaii single will be available in late July/early August and feature the song "Towns On The Moon” on the a-side and "I've Been Bad For Years And Years” on the flip side.
