Monotonix are like those kids in high school with a "reputation". People come to their shows without having ever heard a note just 'cause a friend of theirs told them about another show where the did SOMETHING INSANE. And they don't disappoint. They really do something insane. Every night. I imagine it gets tiring, but holy shit, it's fun to watch.
The criticism most frequently leveled at the band is that their manic live show is just a gimmick. But gimmicks are masks and suits and dancers. Admittedly, the band's live "gimmick" doubtlessly precedes their music, but the sheer physical stamina and creativity of sustaining the energy and entertainment of a Monotonix show elevates the whole thing way beyond the land of gimmick. I actually heard Body Language, their recent Drag City EP, before I found out they were insane fucking dudes. And I liked it. So haters, step off. They're not rock and roll saviors, but they're fun as fuck.
