The punk-inspired black metal onslaughts that have become prevalent lately keep on coming on this release by black metallers Morbid Slaughter. This first album by the group puts a new spin on the writing-about-horror-and-gore tradition; rather sticking to the death metal formula, they instead spin a wave of punk-y black metal fury that tells stories of horror, interweaving references and allusions to genre tropes.
The record is titled A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death, and that seems to be the perfect way to sum up this recording. The guitar is heavy, filthy and distorted, the vocals are ripping and mixed way in the back and the drums are choppy and loud. This works well to create an enjoyable sonic dissonance, but overall gets a bit dicey in terms of actually being able to hear each instrument. The overall effect is a bit too disorganized.
In terms of lyrical content, they focus on topics outlined by song titles such as "Torture Without Anesthesia," "Cannibal Butcher" and "Death Cold Blood," almost going for a Cannibal Corpse type of vibe. Many of the songs are a bit dull and don't particularly stand out, but there are some gems here, too: "Fuck Off (We Murder)" is a fast, ripping punk anthem, and the melody-heavy "Chainsaw Blade" is an easy favourite.
This record probably won't blow anybody away in terms of creativity, but it's a fun listen, and worth checking out if you're a fan of blackened punk.
