Morrissey Pens Open Letter to Johnny Marr: "You Don't Know Me"

The former Smiths guitarist has responded

Morrissey and Johnny Marr are beefing. The pair got into it over internet airwaves in the wee hours of the morning after the former Smiths frontman called out his old bandmate for talking about him in "clickbait" articles.

"This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast. It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?" Morrissey wrote in an open letter addressed to Marr. "The fact is: you don't know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts."

He continued: "Yes, we all know that the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it's cruel and savage. But you've done all that. Move on. It's as if you can't uncross your own legs without mentioning me."

Marr has since responded, writing via Twitter, "An 'open letter' hasn't really been a thing since 1953, It's all 'social media' now. Even Donald J Trump had that one down. Also, this fake news business…a bit 2021 yeah? #makingindiegreatagain."

Morrissey's latest dispatch arrives following Marr's comments naming Moz as the "obvious" collaborator he is no longer "close" with, which he spoke about in an interview with Uncut Magazine published earlier this month.

At the time, the guitarist shared that their falling out shouldn't come as "much of a surprise because [he and Morrisey are] so different," writing that, "everyone I've worked with has been great. The only thing that turned to shit was the Smiths."
