MSTRKRFT Spill Details On New Album, New Hip-hop Direction

MSTRKRFT have once again emerged with more details on their long-awaited new album, Fist of God, revealing that the follow-up to 2006's The Looks should be delivered by March 2009.

In a new interview with Billboard, the Canuck dance duo's Jesse Keeler (of Death From Above 1979 fame) said the spring release would be handled by Steve Aoki's Dim Mak and Downtown in the U.S., while sticking to Last Gang here in Canada. Keeler also told fans to expect a record "really different from our last one" yet one that's "very us."

MSTRKRFT previously released their "Bounce" single via Dim Mak in October (the month originally slated for Fist of God) and showed off the group's new hip-hop-leaning direction, which Keeler said to expect a lot more of on the full-length. Along with N.O.R.E., who lent his vocals to "Bounce," Fist of God's guest stars will include Ghostface Killah, E-40, Freeway, Lil' Mo and John Legend, all of whom will help construct a sound that Keeler warns may alienate some fans.

"We wanted to make a record that was more ideologically like a throwback to when rap and R&B production was old school; the line between that and dance was very blurry," Keeler told Billboard. "We knew people were gonna hate, because idiots don't like music because they like listening to it. They use it as a way of defining who they are. When it changes, it leaves them in a tough spot - 'I can't use this to create my identity anymore' - and their reaction is negative."

Keeler went on to spill some details on how the deal with Dim Mak went down, saying: "We just wanted to try different options for America, and I don't think there's anyone in the States who's been a better supporter of us than Steve Aoki, championing our stuff. So when he approached us it just seemed like it made a lot of sense. It took a lot of convincing though, because we're not quick to do anything, ever."

While a March release date may seem a long way off to hear some new MSTRKRFT material, the duo do have some live dates coming up. Here they are:
