One of my favourite bits of our very long-running Exclaim! Questionnaire interview series is seeing how artists answer the question, "What do you think of when you think of Canada?" For Americans in particular, it often seems to evoke a sense of something utopian — or just like, maple syrup or whatever.
While they've yet to fill out the Questionnaire, MUNA seemingly fall into the former camp of US citizens yearning for our not-much-better situation on this side of the border.
On the latest episode of the indie pop trio's Gayotic podcast, they have Canadian astrologer Chani Nicholas on as their guest, which obviously took conversation in the right direction for frontwoman Katie Gavin to remark, "It seems like there's lots of good, like, lesbian campgrounds in Canada."
"I'm not sure why I said the word 'campground,'" Gavin quickly added, with bandmate Naomi McPherson inquiring, "What did you mean by that? You mean 'enclaves'?"
Gavin explained, "What did I mean by that? Like, little petri dishes. Developing lesbians."
"I thought you meant actual lesbian campgrounds," Josette Maskin chimed in, with Nicholas adding, "I was like, 'I missed that.'"
"That would be nice too," Gavin, clearly an outdoorsy gay, noted. "To be safe? I'll be down for that."
