Even without a full-length to his name, South African musician Muzi has already drawn much attention for his sound, a mix of '90s electronic rhythms, '70s Afrobeat and modern EDM dynamics. On Muzi's debut EP, Fire Fx, he continues mixing aggression and transgression, which is why it's so surprising just how melodic tracks like "Izwe," "Yebo" and "Fire" manage to be.
Giving each song an overdriven production sound, much of Fire Fx possesses the feel and energy of a live sweaty DJ set. Although at times, moments of Fire Fx borrow too much from generic EDM — including strategically placed drops and samples — Muzi seems to possesses a unique sonic IQ and sense of musical history, blending EDM with untapped musical sources that position him as an inventive, gutsy up-and-comer in the bloated world of electronic club music.
