Navies

An Estate

BY Stuart GreenPublished Jul 1, 2005

To even the casual listener — that is those with even a passing knowledge of the post-punk scene circa 1985-’89 — it would probably be obvious that Navies are from DC Channelling the scratchy art school indie rock of Fugazi, Soulside and any number of other Dischord bands, this trio’s debut five-song EP is a glorious return to the days when indie rock was on the cutting edge. And while the songs on An Estate may not sound as dangerous as they would have 15 years or so years ago, they’re still deserving of the attention of fans of the genre. The disc’s crowning achievement is the eight-minute, mostly instrumental "Split Infinitive,” which conjures images of Frank Zappa leading a noise-core band.
