What Happens In Hell, Stays In Hell

BY Tyler MunroPublished Aug 1, 2011

With Nick 13 off murdering Tiger Army classics and doing his best impersonation of a pre-war Elvis Presley, Nekromantix's goofy psychobilly sound is now the genre's dominant form. Naturally, What Happens In Hell, Stays In Hell throws that sound through a bit of a loop. This is a veteran band ― or, more precisely, a veteran frontman with a new backing band ― exploring their rockabilly roots. Tempered tracks like the twang-y "Bela Lugosi's Star" surround traditional speedsters like "MonsterBait" and against all liberal use of the word, the whistled two-step that opens the otherwise hokey "Love You Deadly" is swagger as defined by Kim Nekroman. What Happens In Hell, Stays In Hell isn't the band's best effort ― the Katy Perry-/Happy Days-inspired "I Kissed a Ghoul" is too schlocky for its own good ―but it's enough to hold their throne... for now.
