Artsy, experimental Toronto unit New Fries recently wowed our reviewer with their set at Guelph, ON's Incline/Decline Festival, but in case you missed them live, Exclaim! has got the premiere of a brand new track to satisfy your New Fries cravings. Titled "Jazz," the tune is taken from an upcoming split 7-inch single with Halifax band and former tourmates Old & Weird.
The No Wave-inspired four-piece prefer to describe their spirit rather than their sound, and that "spirit of mess, discovery, trust, non-musicianship, chance, and intuition" is one that definitely shines through on the new track. Countering moments of near-silent droning, giggling, and incoherent chatter with plucky bass runs, bursts of jangly jazzy punk, and a final abrasive blast of static, the new track covers a lot of ground in just under three minutes.
The split single is due out on August 14 via Pleasence Records, but you can give "Jazz" a spin in the player below, right now. Scroll past the group's upcoming shows to give it a listen.
Tour dates:
08/01 Sackville, NB – Sappyfest
08/08 Toronto, ON – Steelworkers Hall
08/22 Ottawa, ON – Arboretum Festival
