For New Pornographers fans still disgruntled by Challengers foray into more reserved, adult-orientated sounds, ringleader Carl Newman has some good news: the band plan to kick out the jams with their next one.
"I think the next Pornographers record will be fairly rock, Newman told Billboard in a recent interview. "I think with Challengers, we moved as far in this direction as we can go, unless we turn into M. Ward or something. The songs I find myself writing these days are a little bit more rock, but thats as far as I can say.
Newman went on to state that he plans to have demos up and ready for the Pornographers by the end of the year, with the band shooting for a 2009 street date for their fifth album. Also, the Vancouver-turned-NY-resident revealed he is fast at work on another solo album, which could hit as early as this fall. However, he said that deciding what constitutes a valid Pornographers track over a solo one isnt so easy.
"In a lot of ways [the songs are] similar, but in a lot of obvious ways theyre not similar, he said. "The Pornographers have all of these different people in the band and different voices, which makes a big difference. On my own records, Im kind of left to my own devices. That can be both good and bad.
The New Pornographers wrap up their current North American tour tomorrow in Washington, DC, with shows in Australia and Japan slated for later this year.
