Backed by a pick-up band and hawking his own brand of beard oil, Nick Ferrio played a relatively low-key acoustic set. Weather wreaked havoc on some flights making it into St. John's, including one containing Lawnya Vawnya co-founders Mathias Kom and Ariel Sharrat, who also happen to be the creative forces behind Ferrio's other band, the Burning Hell. The impact was twofold; Ferrio had to play his show a day earlier to help settle a shifting schedule and, missing his pals, Ferrio was a tad bummed.
The show itself was cool; acoustic guitar, keys, mandolin and violin were all given equal time to shine during unreleased and presumably hastily-rehearsed new songs like "Wrecking Ball" (an original, not a song by Miley Cyrus or Bruce Springsteen or Emmylou Harris via Neil Young or Aubrey O'Day or...good lord, a lot of people write songs called "Wrecking Ball"). So it was mellow music in the raucous Ship but it had its weight and power, and Ferrio continues to be a forceful presence in Canadian folk music.
