Nicolas Jaar

For Nicolas Jaar's appearance at Parc Jean-Drapeau, he started off with some ambient textures, including an early Brian Eno track, and steadily built the pace by playing some gentle vocal tracks, such as slightly skewed Latin remixes of '60s pop and Beach House's "Master of None" (the same track sampled by the Weeknd in his "The Party & The After Party"). It was a perfect early DJ set for the MUTEK edition of Piknic Electronik, using his controller to segue into a pitch-tweaked version of Missy Elliott's "Work It." Seamless, mood-appropriate and soulful, the slow build delivered everything Jaar's live sets with his band fail to. As the performance went on, Jaar wasn't afraid to play more obvious tracks like "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City," leading up to some out-and-out disco, the summery grooves taking it up a notch and ending with a gorgeous Jaar-tinged remix of Cat Power's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."
