It's still April Fools' Day and no one is safe, but this particular non-prank that had people wondering who exactly is opening for Vampire Weekend's New York City concerts went unaddressed for about six weeks until frontman Ezra Koenig finally cleared the air on his Time Crisis podcast over the weekend.
Back in February, Vampire Weekend announced a North American tour behind their new album, Only God Was Above Us, which comes out this Friday (April 5). Not exactly a head-scratcher, but the slight detail that had some people confused was the opening act for the group's pair of Madison Square Garden shows in October.
Supporting acts for the tour (which also include the likes of Ra Ra Riot, Mark Ronson and the English Beat) were all listed at the bottom of the tour poster — and some "Gen-X (Grammar) Cops" thought they spotted a typo in one of the band names.
"[Vampire Weekend's publicist] got many people saying, 'You had an 's' there. You clearly must be talking about the beloved new school hardcore band Turnstile,'" Koenig said in the latest episode of his podcast.
Make no mistake: they fully meant Turnstiles, a Billy Joel tribute outfit from South Florida.
"We had to tell people, 'First of all, how dare you,'" Koenig joked, going on to praise Turnstiles as "America's premier" Billy Joel tribute act. "They're not a bar band. They're doing, like, pretty significant touring," he added. "It's, like, a real show with lights."
As one Twitter user pointed out when the typo-free poster first made its debut, this somehow does actually make more sense than Turnstile opening for Vampire Weekend.
