Wives were awesome, but No Age are - to quote Blood On the Wall - "awesomer." From the ashes of the band that brought us 2004's Erect the Youth Problem comes the latest FatCat signing. Sure, FatCat seems like a questionable fit judging by their roster, but judging by the tasters from their debut Weirdo Rippers (out August 28), this is definitely the album to expand their horizons with. From L.A., the duo of Randy Randall and Dean Spunt tear apart the notion of what we know as punk, cutting and pasting elements of pop and noise into the remnants. This track, taken from their UK-only EP on Upset the Rhythm may not grace their forthcoming full-length, but it exemplifies the caustic and incendiary approach they've harnessed: a sluggish pace, ear-bleeding guitar scratching, ampage on the brink of explosion and perfectly sardonic vocals. Not bad for a pair of skaters that played their first gig just over a year ago. First Pissed Jeans, now this? Looks like a good year for leftfield punk.
