If rock'n'roll history has taught us anything, it's that you're entering some very dangerous territory whenever a band breaks out the phrase "rock musical." And yet that hasn't stopped No Kids' Nicholas Krgovich from gathering up a bunch of his musical pals for the Vancouverite's very first exploration of song and dance.
Titled In the Yard, Havin' Fun: A Prison Musical, Krgovich's stage production is set to debut as part of Vancouver's PuSh festival next month and tells the tale of three convicts and their hackneyed attempts to break out of the slammer. However, Shawshank this is not, with the work apparently venturing into a much more Doris Day/Rock Hudson sort of territory after the cons run into some spirited female prison workers.
To help bring this prison musical to life, Krgovich has enlisted a bevy of musical collaborators, including Ladyhawk's Ryan Peters and Duffy Driedger, Cryptacize's Nedelle Torrisi and Chris Cohen, Tygh Runyan of the Beans, and fellow No Kid Julia Chirka. He's even snatched up frequent No Kids tour-mates Parenthetical Girls to do a performance after the show.
In the Yard, Havin' Fun will play February 5 and 6 in Vancouver at Performance Works alongside a new musical piece by Argentinean songstress Juana Molina. For more details and ticket information, you can visit the PuSH website here.
