Fourteen years after hip-hop legend Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, the FBI has revealed the case documents to the public. The agency has posted a heavily redacted version of the case files on its website. While the files have been edited, with many pages nearly unreadable due to the blanked-out info, they're definitely an interesting read. Unfortunately, it still leaves the case open-ended: the killer of Biggie Smalls (aka Christopher Wallace) has yet to be found.
The files reveal that the bullets that killed Wallace were rare Gecko 9mm ammunition. These bullets are made in Germany and sold in the U.S. only in California and New Jersey. Regrettably, the ammunition could not be traced to anyone.
A lengthy timeline describing the beef between East Coast and West Coast rappers is also presented. While investigators, hoping to also link the crime to the slaying of Tupac Shakur, looked into some men who were present at both crimes, they couldn't necessarily link anyone to the killings. They also found that several members of the LAPD at the party that Biggie was at before the shooting were employed by West Coast rival Suge Knight's label Death Row Records as security officers, a violation of LAPD policy.
While the case still has some significant loose ends, it does answer the question of what was on Wallace's person at the time of death: a Georgia driver's licence, a pen, 0.91 grams of marijuana, an asthma inhaler and three condoms.
Many more fascinating details can be nabbed from the documents over here.
