Interstellar Rodeo hosts interstitial acts, typically up-and-coming solo artists, that perform while the stage is being changed over between larger bands — the performer tries to make an impact while a constellation of distractions swirl behind them.

NYSSA seemed to come out of nowhere, walked out past the monitors with a calculated swagger and drew everyone's into her orbit like a bleach blonde comet.

As an interstitial act, her set was ephemeral, but it was charged with a campy confidence and stunningly strong voice that breaks in just the right places when NYSSA puts all her power behind it. There were flashes of very young k.d. lang in NYSSA's vocal prowess, and the pre-sequenced, laptop synth-glam she used as a backing track made sure that it was always front and centre.

Whether she remains a comet flying by or crystallizes into a star is yet to be seen, but her set at Interstellar Rodeo was an impressive introduction to NYSSA's universe.
