Of Montreal Plan Multi-Format Release for Ninth Album

When Of Montreal leaked word on their ninth full-length, Skeletal Lamping, they promised the upcoming release would be anything but typical. And in terms of packaging, this definitely seems to be the case.

In efforts to "expand the perception of music packaging beyond traditional flat, square artwork and to bring consumers back to record stores to get it," Of Montreal are giving fans at least seven different packaging choices for Lamping: a CD, 180-gram LP, tote bag, T-shirt, button set, paper lantern and wall decal set, all of which come packed with a download of the record and a unique twist on the album art.

And if the idea of buying an album in the form of something like a tote bag is still a little too out there for you, the more traditional options of CD and LP are coming with some added bonuses. The vinyl will come with a big-ass 3x4-foot fold-out horse poster, while the CD will include a ghoulish floral-and-fang diorama that you can mount on the CD player. But, really, no matter your packaging tastes, Of Montreal have you covered on this one and are getting a bit closer to "capturing the labyrinthine complexity of this human consciousness.”

In other Of Montreal news, Kevin Barnes and the band will embark on a North American tour following Skeletal Lamping’s October 7 release on Polyvinyl. On their trek, they have two Canadian dates: Toronto's Queen Elizabeth Theatre on October 28, and Montreal's Metropolis on October 29. Also, Polyvinyl is now accepting pre-orders for the "Id Engager” seven-inch, which hits August 29 on gold, blue and purple vinyl and includes an exclusive b-side.
