Oh No

Madlib’s little brother has been making noise for the past couple of years as a gifted MC and up-and-coming producer, but soon the novelty of his family will die down just as people forgot that Del the Funky Homosapien is Ice Cube’s cousin. Many have been waiting for this full-length to drop, with numerous singles and appearances on various Stones Throw projects cropping up to whet the appetite of hip-hop heads everywhere, and the results are impressive, but The Disrupt is more Jaylib than Madvillain. The usual suspects come out to help see Oh No off with his debut, including J Dilla lending an impressive hand-clap/hi-hat combination beat for Oh No and Roc C to drop their verbal. Medaphoar lends his talent on a classic video game-inspired "The Ride” and Declaime’s efforts are wasted on a pro-herb interlude. Of course, what would The Disrupt be without some production from the Beat Conductor, as Madlib brings some of the best moments to table on a hefty six joints, including album highlights such as "Every Section” and "WTF” that cropped up earlier on We Came From Beyond. Still, Oh No is the one responsible for the success of this strong debut and it shouldn’t take long for him to step out from his brother’s shadow and stand on his two feet as a premier artist with a lethal rhyming/production weapon at his disposal.
