This reissue of On's debut album comes as a welcome addition to the Type imprint's broadening roster. Originally released in 2004, Your Naked Ghost Comes Back at Night is a stunning example of dark ambient music without any of the usual trappings of such a bleak genre. On are the collaborative project of percussionist Steven Hess (Pan American) and French composer Sylvain Chauveau. The duo placed the source material for Your Naked Ghost in the hands of Norway's Helge Sten (aka Deathprod), who manipulated the compositions into a bleary, reverberating mass of suffocating vapour and thick, black smoke. Sten's alchemical processing has altered the original recordings beyond recognition; listening to Your Naked Ghost is a process akin to hearing music played from the bottom of a well. The distant nature of the tones creates a sense of dread that penetrates deep beneath the flesh.
