Secret Wars

BY Neil HavertyPublished Jan 1, 2006

Oneida’s Secret Wars comes in doses and, assuming you have no opposition towards the odd and danceable, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find something you love about it. You’ll probably pick and choose your favourite tracks each time you listen but your decision will surely change with every evaluation. Some days you might crave the Kinsella-meets-Zappa complexity of "The Last Act, Every Time,” others you’ll devote to the army-chant dance groove of "Capt Bo Dignifies the Allegations With A Response.” But have no doubt about it, there’s a time and place for each of these nine songs. With the release of Secret Wars, Three Gut recruits a nice label-mate for our beloved Constantines and further diversifies the label’s sound.

What are the major differences between your American and Canadian labels? At the moment, I suppose Three Gut is a little smaller but there’s no real qualitative difference. At the time we started releasing records with Jagjaguar, things were very similar to the way Three Gut is now except that Three Gut gets a lot more attention and people really like it, whereas Jagjaguar sort of toiled away in obscurity for a long time. We only want to make music with people that we like and that we trust and that are willing to go at things in a communal or collectivist strategy. That’s how we make our music, that’s how we do everything. We wouldn’t want to work with a label that did it any other way.

Your bio says you’re only interested in playing in Italy and remote Canadian cities. Won’t your American label have something to say about that? That’s sort of our future goal. We are playing a lot in Italy this spring and we’ll get to Canada, just not exclusively. It originally came from a conversation we had with the Constantines. We had some plans to play in places that I didn’t even know existed. You know, places in Northern Canada where you have to fly or drive long distances to get to. There’s something about the wilds of Canada. It’d probably be much more fun to play there than anywhere in the U.S.
