Oscar G / Various Artists

Made in Miami

BY Philip DowneyPublished Nov 1, 2005

Oscar G is one of half of veteran house producers Murk, and these two discs reflect the Murk and Miami sound. Heavy drums, lots of extra percussion, stabs of melody, plenty of looped hooks and strong vocals all come together for a deep and rumbling mix, which is. The mixing is done extremely well as is the track selection, with a continuous flow of smooth transitions and properly measured ups and downs. There are plenty of great tracks, and he’s re-edited and looped some of them. Some of highlights on disc one are K&S Project’s trance-y "The Music,” Peace Division’s "Groove Me” and his three-track mash-up of DJ Pezi’s "The New Dimensions,” Basement Jaxx’s "Fly Life” and Ralph Rosario’s "You Used to Hold Me.” On the second, more electronic disc, standouts include Carl Kennedy & Johnny Gleeson’s "Banta Boom” and Mark Knight’s acidic "The Box.” In short, if you like tough American and English house this is the disc for you.
