The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

"Hell"

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 10, 2015

A few months ago, Kip Berman of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart shared a couple of recent home demos, including a sprightly, funky number called "Hell." Now, having already announced the Hell EP, the Pains and have shared the studio version of the tune.

The song sports a disco-flavoured funk strut with soft-spoken pop melodies, making the whole thing strongly resemble Orange Juice's "Rip It Up." The arrangement swells with soul-flecked horns, swirling keys and sweet harmonies, with the whole thing culminating in a surprisingly cheerful refrain of "We're going to hell."

Berman said in a statement, "The song 'Hell' is about how insufferable performances of sensitivity are when there's a good song playing and someone you want to dance with."

Hell will be out on November 13 through Painbow.
