You could argue that Panda Bear has been keeping it creepy all year long with his grimly titled Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper and its various remix projects. Now, the artist born Noah Lennox has unearthed a selection of sinister scraps in time for Halloween. He calls the extras roundup Swallow at the Hollow.
There are pure-bliss moments to be found on the nearly half-hour offering, including an extended, shimmering drone around the 11-minute mark, but Panda Bear keeps things chilling as well. Spin, if you will, an early moment that conjures early '80s John Carpenter soundtrack work as blasted through a tinny, broken ghettoblaster. Elsewhere, stormy night gushes of wind blast above tranquil Balearic tapestries, while a drum-and-bass shuffle gets paired with an unnerving, car-revving stretch of sound.
Lennox explained of the odds-and-sods mix:
Swallow at the Hollow is a mix of things I made around the same time as all the Grim Reaper tracks. They kind of feel like scribbles or doodles and for some reason or another I couldn't find my way of singing with them. Some of them just stuck out like sore thumbs. I hope you enjoy them and wanted to say thanks very much for listening and thanks to those of you who came out to see the shows the past couple of years. Happy Halloween....
