NXNE hits Toronto next week, and in addition to a stacked musical lineup, there will be art exhibits and a seemingly endless list of parties to attend. That list of events just got shorter, though, as Paper Bag Records has been forced to cancel its outdoor block party.
As part of the local label's #PAPER100 celebrations (marking its hundredth release), it had planned to host an outdoor show across from Trinity Bellwoods with Lobby, Army Girls, Young Rival, Grey Lands and a DJ set from PS I Love You's Paul Saulnier.
Unfortunately, the event has now been called off as a result of troubles securing the proper permits. The label released the following statement about the decision on its Facebook page:
We have some sad news, we have to cancel The #PAPER100 Block Party. After months of careful planning and dealing with red tape, we were assured by the city that our applications looked good and we were in line for our approvals. We recently received news that the city would not grant us the necessary permits to hold the event.
Since November we've been put in endless hours to correctly maneuver through the city's bureaucracy. Our goal was to engage the community and city that has given so much to us. Bands were booked, beer was brewed, and all proper street closure equipment rented. All wheels were in motion until the city pulled the plug.
We are appreciative of NXNE for working endlessly with us to try and make this event happen and would like to thank all who planned to attend the event!
We've heard a lot of talk recently about making Toronto a 'Music City.' It seems there is still a long way to go...
Despite the cancellation of the block party, Paper Bag Records will still be hosting a night of live music at Lee's Palace on June 18. Scheduled performers include Nils Edenloff (Rural Alberta Advantage), the Acorn, PS I Love You, Frog Eyes, Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, Laura Barrett, and members of the Sam Roberts Band. The show will be recorded as a compilation for a future physical release.
