Patti Smith

"Aqua Teen Dream"

Following 13 seasons of freakishly experimental, nonsensical, and almost-always taste-questioning comedy, long-running Adult Swim animated program Aqua Teen Hunger Force runs its series finale this Sunday (August 23). The tragic though momentous occasion comes packaged with an elegy from one of our greatest poets, Patti Smith. Though we don't know the full circumstances behind the episode, you can hear Smith's musical farewell online now.

As you'll hear down below, "Aqua Teen Dream" is a simple but mournful piece built around a spare piano melody and Smith's tributary lines. One thing we gather from the track is that smart-ass Master Shake and sentient, mush-mouthed beef ball Meatwad "are dead," and that "it's the end of Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

Though the episode is titled "The Last One Forever and Ever (For Real This Time) (We ****ing Mean It)," it should be noted that the song doesn't alert us to the whereabouts of team leader Frylock. And what of next-door neighbour Carl, the Mooninites, the keepers of the Broodwich, and so many more?

Considering the show has gone through a few name changes over the years, including Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1, Aqua TV Show Show, and its current iteration as Aqua Teen Hunger Force Forever, is it possible the creators may have an offshoot in the works?

Smith is one of several musicians who have contributed to the series over the years. The original theme song was handled by rapper Schooly D, while other acts to deliver music through the program include Flying Lotus, Mariachi El Bronx, Andrew W.K., Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and more.
