Earlier this year, Peter Gabriel dropped his orchestral covers record, Scratch My Back. Now, the art rock legend is working on another orchestral album, this time doing reworkings of his own songs.
In a new video blog posted on his official website, Gabriel spoke about the new project, which is currently being recorded in the George Martin-founded AIR Studios. Like Scratch My Back, the songs are performed with his New Blood Orchestra and arranged by composer John Metcalfe.
This follows Gabriel's recent orchestral tour, which contained string arrangements of some of his past hits like "Red Rain" and "Solsbury Hill." In a video posted back in June, the singer said that the album would be "pretty much what some of you heard on the live gigs but we have added and changed one or two things."
His June video blog contains a clip of "Blood of Eden" from 1992's Us. The July update has a excerpt of "Digging in the Dirt," also from Us.
As for when we can expect to hear the final versions, Gabriel said, "We hope, I think, to be done later in the year, so it will probably be out, with any luck, early next year."
Sometime after that, we'll hear I'll Scratch Yours, the companion piece to Scratch My Back, featuring various artists covering Gabriel's songs. In his June update, the singer said that the project would be temporarily put on hold while he waited for a few artists to submit their covers.
