Oncer

BY Chris RolfePublished Jun 1, 2000

This Australian dude put out a couple of very obscure psych-folk records (even Australian collectors can't find them now) in the late '60s. Now he's turned up again (with the help of Texas psych-freaks ST 37 and a handful of other musicians) on this collection of poetic, lo-fi songs. Not unlike the late-period recordings of Roky Erikson and Syd Barrett, Oncer is fascinating and understated, but nonetheless disquieting and solitary sounding. "Hey, Eternity Started Awhile Ago" is particularly haunting. You'll either get it, or you won't.
