A quick note for out-of-town bands: every out-of-town band comes to Montreal and ironically butchers the French language during their "hilarious" banter. It's not funny or endearing to the locals. Well, unless Deerhoof do it, because Deerhoof make everything fun. For a decade-and-a-half-old band, they perform like kids on Christmas morning after unwrapping their instruments. This youthful exuberance should not lead you to believe this band are amateur, however. For every high kick, cute lyric and robotic dance move there was a sweet riff, compelling melody or double-take-inducing drum-kit embellishment. A packed auditorium wanted two encores and Deerhoof "bunny jumped" right to it. Formidable, c'est magnifique.
