Legendary Krautrock group Popol Vuh can be credited with many things, from spearheading ambient music and helping to popularize the Moog to frontman Florian Fricke's solo work and, most importantly, his inimitable soundtracks for Werner Herzog. Married with Herzog's visual aesthetic and singular storytelling, Fricke's scores worked wonders in the films. Now, five of Popol Vuh's Herzog soundtracks can be appreciated again on their own thanks to a CD box set.
FACT points to an impressive package on its way from German label SPV. Composed of five CDs, the collection features Fricke's work on five of Herzog's most important films: 1972's Aguirre, 1976's Heart of Glass, 1979's Nosferatu, 1982's Fitzcarraldo and 1987's Cobra Verde.
Along with the soundtracks in their entirety, the "collector's box" comes with a 98-page hardcover book featuring rare photos, film stills and extensive liner notes. The set will be available on January 24 for £45 (about $70 Canadian) and is described as "strictly limited," although the exact number of sets available is unknown.
