This week is already shaping up to be a good one for fans of slap bass. First, Red Hot Chili Peppers officially announced their new album, and now '90s alt-rock vets Primus have followed suit. On September 13, Les Claypool and co. will release Green Naugahyde via ATO/Prawn Song.
A press release describes the release as "a cerebral and complex album that, like all of the band's output, is teeming with the band's signature blend of whimsy and underlying darkness." It was recorded at singer/bassist Claypool's Rancho Relaxo studio and features longtime guitarist Larry LaLonde and returning drummer Jay Lane.
This will be the band's seventh studio LP, and their first since 1999's Antipop.
Comparing it to the group's past releases, Claypool said in a statement, "If I were to look at all of our records, it seems like this is reminiscent of the early stuff. Obviously, with Jay there's a newness to it, but because he left the band right before we recorded our first record, his approach has an eerie harkening to the old Frizzle Fry days."
The news that Primus is releasing a new LP doesn't come as a surprise. Last fall, Claypool said that the band were working on a new album that would be "eclectic" and "strong and intense."
The band have a number of tour dates in the coming months, and promise an extensive fall tour once the album drops. See the schedule below.
