Primus Working on "Strong and Intense" New Album

BY Josiah HughesPublished Sep 22, 2010

Earlier this year, proggy alt-rock freaks Primus returned from the grave for a North American tour - their first headlining run since 2006. The first batch of shows took place in July and August, and saw the group travelling all over the continent, including a Canadian appearance in Toronto. As promised, they're now spending some time at work on a new full-length album.

Still in their writing stages, the band told Billboard that they're "accumulating material on a daily basis." Bassist Les Claypool clarified that a little, saying, "Right now it's throwing pasta at the wall and seeing which noodles are sticking, recording musical ideas from sound checks and whatnot, even live shows... We've been branching off on various tangents, and I have notebooks full of various writings. And now with the advent of the iPhone I've got my little recorder and can record things as I'm driving down the street, at a whim."

As for the music itself, Claypool says the band will try their hardest to experiment with new sounds. "There was never a sense of musical direction with Primus or anything we've done," he said. "It's eclectic, of course; I tend not to like to go down the same path twice, so we're trying to open new doors... I would imagine the rhythms are going to be very strong and intense."

The album likely won't be recorded or released until next year, as Primus have a solid touring schedule booked until early 2011. The run shows will take the band all over the globe, including Canadian stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg. All dates are below.
